About the Square Rigger
Welcome to the Square Rigger! We are under new ownership as of 2023. If you haven’t stopped by in a while, we encourage you to come back and give us a try. We can’t wait to welcome you as part of our new family.
Here at the Square Rigger restaurant, it’s all about New England fusion. Our menu offers a creative blend of traditional New England seafood fare -- bringing old and new, local and even global together, to create dishes that are both familiar and excitingly new. We use the freshest seafood, quality cuts of meat, and bold, diverse sauces to create a harmony of flavors and offerings.
Our Attention to Detail Doesn’t Stop at Our Food.
The Square Rigger also offers a full bar to pair with your dishes including: craft cocktails made from freshly squeezed juices, wines, domestic and imported beers, drafts, and spirits. If you prefer non-alcoholic options, we proudly offer a full mocktail menu – one of the only Island restaurants to do so.
We’ve also continued to offer some old Square Rigger favorites in our new menu. Whether you're enjoying our beloved New England stuffed lobster, prime rib, swordfish, a satisfying Rigger Burger, or savoring the robust flavors of our new Lobster Garganelli, we have something to satisfy everyone’s taste in your party.
The Square Rigger on Martha’s Vineyard is a must-stop destination for locals and visitors who are seeking a welcoming atmosphere, memorable meal and a quintessential New England dining experience.
Parking
An island staple since 1963, the Square Rigger is located in an 1800’s Edgartown whaling captain’s home. It sits at the head of the Edgartown Triangle where Beach Road meets Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road. We have ample parking in our lot or just next door in the Edgartown Triangle’s main lot.
The History of the Square Rigger
Many ask us about the history of our restaurant and location. The building started out as a whaling captain’s house that was originally situated out on the Great Plains by Edgartown Great Pond. In 1949, then owner Manuel S. Duarte wanted to move it to Vineyard Haven, but it got stuck on its way there and ended up in its current location (which looked a lot different than it does today.)
In addition to serving as a family home, the building has been used as an artist studio and upholstery shop. In 1963, John Donnelly bought the property and turned it into the restaurant you know today as the Square Rigger. Donnelly sold it to Will Holtham, former owner of the Homeport in Menemsha, and was later purchased in 1995 by Tony and Doreen Rezendez, with son Dana at the helm as chef and daughter Amy at the front of the house.
"We had a great time at Square Rigger Restaurant! The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and reserving a table was hassle-free. The food tasted fresh and was wonderfully prepared. Highly recommend stopping by after a day on the Island."

“We will definitely be back! This restaurant is one of the best on the Vineyard! The food and cocktails are amazing, and our server was very attentive to our needs. We had the lobster lollipops and coxinha to start, and the grilled salmon and prime rib as our main dishes. Everything was cooked to perfection and delicious!”
